Keep Lavish Diamond Reynolds, her child and the entire Castile-extended family in your prayers today. Lavish is said to have finally been released from police custody. Now she must begin to work to rebuild her and her child’s life, after witnessing and documenting Philando Castile’s execution by Minnesota police. We uplift their courage, and mourn for a loss no one should have to face. #farfromover
Confession
Being a Black woman, who is also a mother to a Black child is so damn hard. You’re on constant watch and in protection mode, as you know there are forces out there just wanting to hurt your child. Forces hoping for his/her downfall. Who have been plotting against him/her since birth. You have to be doubly strong, doubly tough, and doubly perceptive. It’s exhausting. And the thing is, the world always assumes you don’t need help, cos, you know, Black women are just so damn strong, right? Yes, and No. We have to be strong because being anything else is just plain foolish when raising a child. Period. We’re also fighting multiple battles daily: Black, Black women, Black women who happen to be mothers, raising Black children in an anti Black children world, Black women at work, Black women studying etc. These titles all come with extra weight simply because we are Black. But we are human, too. We get tired, depressed, anxious, teary, and would just love some support and understanding. I’m a single parent, but I notice even Black women who have their men around are still carrying the majority of the weight. I won’t rant about the Black males who have failed Black families, as it’s simple, but also rather complex. Too long for this post. So to all the beautiful Black mother’s out there, whether you’re mother to 1 (like me) or multiple kids: you are amazing! Don’t let society, churches, schools or the media tell you otherwise. We’re here raising kings and queens. Who else does that?!!
Black women and mothers are among the bravest, most steadfast, hard working people and have needed to be so for centuries. Also the most under-appreciated smh. I salute you.
